She was stooping on the edge of the stone fountain, stretching her arm with her hand inside the water, searching and searching for coins to pick up.
He thought he had never seen such a beautiful woman… in such a weird task…
The darkness of the night didn't allow him to see anything, but her trying to steal the coins of the fountain.

The man kept staring at the woman who kept picking coins from the water; unable to collect more coins, she abandoned her task and turned around to sit on the edge of the fountain. Then she realized, a man was staring at her standing just a few meters from her, hiding in the darkness like if it was his coat.

-Coins are tiny and valuable –she said as she smiled, looking at the coins –I love to recollect as much as I can.
The man walked a few steps until he stood a few meters in front of her, dropping his coat of shadows.
-Isn't the night beautiful? –the girl asked staring at the man's face, focusing on his dark brownish eyes which reflected no emotion.
-What's your name? –the girl asked with a beautiful smile on her face that made him to almost show a feeling of excitement on his face.
-Alan –The man answered.
-Hello Alan, my name is Victoria.

Then Alan sat down along with Victoria, as she happily showed him the coins on her hand. She looked like a five-year-old girl, but strangely, Alan considered that to be something nice.
-I couldn't pick coins of value, but I just love to have them, it's like having a memory you can't never remember, but it somehow amuses you.
-then what it's the point of having a memory if you can't remember? It isn't amusing –Alan argued. It seemed so stupid the idea that brightly amused Victoria. It didn't have sense, it was stupid for him. How could a few coins amuse him? Not even having all the coins in the world could amuse this man.
-Are you kidding me? Imagine all the hands that have touched this coins! All the pockets that had carried them, all the couches were they have been lost, I bet that if they had life they would wonder how did they end sinking in a fountain!
For a moment, Alan seemed to consider the idea, but ended up throwing it, he didn't like the thought of what the coins could have been used for.
In that moment he considered Victoria to be a stupid girl. She was easily amused, seriously, he could tell her the fountain was magic and she would absolutely believe it and throw the coins to the fountain just to pick them back after making her wish. But there was something that he liked about her… not the fact that she was stunning beautiful, but there was something in the way she behaved, something he couldn't stand and something he was curious about.

-What are you going to use the coins for? –Alan said, as trying to avoid the silence. He found her voice sweet and beautiful, as if his ears begged to hear it more.
-I'm going to make a wish, a big wish –Victoria grinned, excited about the idea.
Alan suddenly felt stupid for thinking how such stupid words could be pronounced by such beautiful voice. He ignored the feeling and once again, with argues, begged for her voice to caress his ears.
-That's stupid –Alan said with no emotion on his voice –how could a wish come true by throwing some coins to a fountain? It's ridiculous, people is ridiculous for believing in such a stupid thing. Is not like something is going to happen, besides, if it did, why would you had to paid for that? It's just a stupid lie people invents to have a little hope, their wishes never come true.
-And what is wrong with having a little hope? –Victoria asked and Alan seemed to be surprised –maybe you're saying that because that's something you lack, hope. Hope keeps us searching for a better tomorrow, hope makes us smile, gives us the chance to believe something bad is going to end fine, hope keeps us smiling and trying hard, and in the end, with hope, we achieve what we want. That's the reason why we throw coins and ask for wishes at a fountain. We ask for something with hope, being that what makes us to work hard and receive what we want.

Surprisingly, Alan found Victoria's argument not bad, but not impressive. He thought about it a little; maybe she was right in the hope thing, maybe it had sense, throwing a coin for a wish… making a sacrifice, believing it's worth it.
-In any case, it wouldn't work if you stole the coins that other people has thrown –He argued back, trying to erase the thoughts of moments ago, like if he had found himself fooled by what he considered stupid.
-Who says I'm going to take this coins and throw them at the fountain?
-So you're not taking them?
-I'm taking them, but I'm going to give them to random people so they can wish for something.
-That doesn't make sense at all.
-For a negative and blind soul like you it doesn't –she said as she dropped the coins in the bag of her coat and then she took a penny from the pocket of her pants.
-Take this, it's mine, and now it's yours –she handed the penny to Alan and he stared at him like if it had no value.
-What is this penny for?- he asked, still with the penny in his hand.
-For you to use it when you decide to wish something, so you just come to the fountain and throw it asking for it.
-I'm not going to do it –Alan refused.
-Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but maybe in a few days you will.

Victoria began to walk away between the shadows and soon Alan's voice stopped her.
-Where are you going? –he asked, feeling strange for seeing her walking away. Victoria turned her head and smiled.
-Where the luck takes me.
And she continued walking until she disappeared in the shadows.
Alan dropped the penny on his pocket and soon walked away too.

The Next day Alan came back to the same place, which now was surrounded by people the daylight attracted with joy. He remembered Victoria and her words, still thinking they were full of nonsense. But even if he thought that, he couldn't help but search for her with his eyes, only to stop at the fountain where children were dropping coins given by their parents, asking for wishes to come true.
-What did you ask for? –Alan listened one of the children to ask the other.
-It's a secret –he smiled –if I tell you it won't come true.

Alan frowned and stopped to search for Victoria. He went to continue with his day, far away from the annoying fountain surrounded by people.
The Next day he came back, with the same hidden intentions he had yesterday. But he didn't see Victoria between the people, so he came back the next day, and the next, and the next…

When a month passed by, and Alan had almost forgotten Victoria, he found himself walking a path he knew, a popular place everyone liked to visit. Is not that the view was gorgeous there, but the fountain with coins inside was popular for making people's humble and noble wishes true.
He thought, once again in Victoria, and he realized he was unable to deny that the reason he came back to that place, or avoided it was because he had the hope of seeing Victoria there, or he couldn't stand being there without Victoria.
He also realized something important... He had the hope Victoria mentioned when they met. He hoped he would see her again, that was the reason he ended up there. He remembered the penny Victoria gave him and approached his hand to the pocket of his coat. He grabbed a penny and approached the fountain not sure if it was something he was willing to do. He felt ridiculous, but he found himself wanting to do it, no matter what he would think about himself.
He allowed the coin to fall into the water of the fountain with his eyes closed, asking for his wish to come true with genuine hope and faith.
A minute passed and he opened his eyes, the sun received him with bright light forcing him to look away to a specific spot he found pleasant after he recognized what he was seeing.
It was Victoria and she looked as happy as the first time they met. She also recognized him and began to run towards Alan, who she embraced with joy.
-I saw you dropping the penny, but I wasn't sure it was you –she smiled –What did you ask for?
-It's a secret –Alan smiled.

-Wishes do come true…
I think the story speaks more than what I could write here.
I hope you like it, because I enjoyed writing this.
